How students are considered

Published processParents, staff and community members may refer a student, and secondary students may self-refer. Kindergarten and Grade 2 receive universal screening. The committee considers parent and teacher surveys, portfolio evidence, intelligence or ability testing, achievement and creativity. Kindergarten requires the ability score plus at least two other qualifying measures; Grades 1-12 require at least one qualitative and two quantitative qualifying measures.

What service can look like

Published modelGrades K-5 receive EXPO pull-out services. Grades 6-8 receive a gifted English language arts block, and Grades 9-12 use Honors, Advanced Placement and Dual Credit pathways matched to advanced academic need.

01Confirm the applicable fall or spring window with the campus and submit the district referral form by the listed deadline.

02Use the parent survey and portfolio to document specific examples of advanced reasoning, creativity, rapid learning and unusually deep interests.

03Ask which ability, achievement and creativity measures apply to the child's grade and request the score profile after testing.

04Compare the profile with the district's published thresholds: surveys in the moderate-to-strong range, portfolio at least 6, ability at least 125, or achievement and creativity at or above the 95th percentile.

05Request the written committee decision and the handbook's current reconsideration or appeal instructions.

06After placement, confirm the K-5 pull-out schedule, middle-school ELA block or exact high-school Honors, AP and Dual Credit plan.
