Published criteria list ability and achievement at or above the 97th percentile, a critical or creative thinking portfolio score of 4, and a parent or teacher inventory score of 4. Phase I is an online ability assessment; Phase II adds achievement, a creative and critical thinking task, and teacher and guardian inventories.

Grades 7-8 can use GEMS leadership, humanities, social studies, reading/language arts and science options.
