How students are considered
Published processSterling lists AP Potential reports from the PSAT, Honors placement tests, LinkIt mathematics and reading benchmarks, NJSLA results, and teacher recommendations. The district does not publish one districtwide gifted cut score because access is course-specific. Families should therefore use the current program-planning guide and request the exact prerequisite and completed placement record for each proposed course.
What service can look like
Published modelThe district's gifted continuum at the high-school level consists of Honors and AP courses plus current High School Plus and dual-credit partnerships. Course availability spans core academic subjects and selected career or specialty pathways. Winter group presentations explain prerequisites and placement criteria; students then meet individually with counselors in spring to review achievement and teacher recommendations.

01Before winter scheduling, identify the specific Honors, AP, High School Plus, or dual-credit course rather than asking for a generic gifted placement.
02Request that course's current prerequisite and ask which PSAT AP Potential, placement-test, LinkIt, NJSLA, grade, and teacher evidence will be considered.
03Attend or follow up after the winter course-selection presentation so the student does not miss a course-specific step.
04During the spring conference, compare the student's evidence with the written prerequisite and ask the counselor to document the recommendation.
05If placement is denied, ask whether the concern is a course prerequisite or district procedural compliance; Sterling states that the statutory complaint process cannot change an individual placement decision.
06For college-credit courses, separately confirm registration, partner-college, fee, and transcript requirements after school placement is approved.
