Mount Olive runs a structured K-8 gifted review each spring. Committees combine nominations, district mathematics and ELA benchmarks, broader school data, teacher evidence, and—when useful—CogAT reasoning results.

How students are considered
Published processEach school's committee reviews nominations and district benchmarks, then examines schoolwide data and teacher or staff input on thinking skills, creativity, and academic habits. Students below an initial achievement cutoff may complete selected CogAT portions so cognitive potential can supplement demonstrated achievement.
What service can look like
Published modelElementary students receive regular-class differentiation plus enriched interdisciplinary work connecting history, culture, and STEAM. High school offers acceleration, curriculum compacting, Honors and AP courses, electives, and extracurricular enrichment; continuation depends on program requirements.
Your starting checklist

01Before spring review, ask the school for nomination, benchmark, CogAT, committee, notice, and appeal dates.
02Submit evidence showing advanced achievement or cognitive potential, including creativity and academic habits that benchmarks may miss.
03Request every benchmark, nomination, teacher input, CogAT component, and schoolwide comparison used.
04If appealing, submit the district form by the notice-specific deadline with the disputed evidence and keep proof.
05Track the expected two-to-four-week appeal response and supply requested testing or documents promptly.
06If admitted, obtain the actual differentiated or advanced service, schedule, goals, and continuation requirements.
