Laurel Springs decides GATE eligibility at the beginning of each school year using MAP, report cards, teacher input, behavior, state testing, and prior participation. Qualifying Grades 4-6 meet once weekly in groups of ten or fewer.

How students are considered
Published processThe GATE teacher reviews every K-6 cumulative file. For K-2, the published criteria are MAP, prior report-card grades, and teacher recommendations; for Grades 3-6, the profile also includes standardized achievement scores. The teacher and principal score a local chart and a committee selects participants; prior GATE participation does not guarantee renewal.
What service can look like
Published modelGrades 4-6 participants work individually and in teams across subjects in a weekly GATE class capped at ten students per group. Each selected student receives a parent conference and a written educational plan; enrichment may include classroom extensions, special classes, out-of-class sessions, interdisciplinary inquiry, independent study, research, and open-ended work.

01Before the beginning-of-year review closes, ask for the 2026-27 GATE calendar and the district's scoring chart.
02Request the child's MAP, state and other standardized scores, prior report card, teacher recommendation, behavior evidence, and total selection score.
03Share work demonstrating advanced inquiry, independent learning, creativity, and readiness for cross-subject project work.
04Request the written decision and ask how the committee treated each criterion and available group capacity.
05If selected, review the written educational plan, weekly schedule, goals, projects, progress measures, and classroom coordination before consenting.
06Raise selection, project, or suspension concerns with the GATE teacher, then principal; use the Board complaint route for alleged statutory noncompliance.
