How students are considered

Published processK-2 evidence includes Naglieri nonverbal ability, teacher referral or performance scale, parent input, portfolio, writing, and work samples. Grades 3-8 add reading and mathematics benchmarks and NJSLA. Grades 9-12 use portfolios, writing and work samples, plus annual GIEP review. A student is not excluded because one matrix component is weak. Families may provide an input packet and ask gifted staff to explain the rubric and scores.

Your starting checklist

Turn the published process into clear next steps.

Confirm current instructions with the district before submitting. Bloomfield does not predict placement or reproduce protected assessments.

01Ask the gifted teacher for the 2026-27 screening, parent-input, committee-review, and notification dates.
02Request the child's completed matrix and every underlying score, rating, benchmark, portfolio item, and work sample used.
03Describe advanced need—not just high grades—using evidence of pace, complexity, creativity, task commitment, or curriculum already mastered.
04Ask which specific service is proposed and how it changes content, pace, grouping, or instruction beyond the regular curriculum.
05If the result appears incomplete, first request a score and rubric explanation from gifted faculty, then use the district appeal form promptly and identify the missing or disputed evidence.
