Elk Township reviews students twice each year and publishes several ways to qualify. On-or-above-level ELA and math performance creates an automatic invitation route, but CogAT, teacher referral, classroom evidence, creativity, and exceptional strength in one domain can also establish need.

How students are considered
Published processThe automatic academic route requires On or Above Level performance on at least one district-approved ELA measure and one mathematics measure—not every listed assessment. ELA evidence may include NJSLA, IRLA, or Achieve3000; mathematics may include NJSLA, STAR Math, or i-Ready. CogAT, teacher referral, work, advanced reasoning, creativity, rapid learning, and single-domain strength provide other routes. Formal reviews occur twice yearly.
What service can look like
Published modelServices are matched to the student's demonstrated area, readiness, and intensity of need. Options include classroom differentiation, adjusted content, pace, complexity, questioning, and products; advanced instruction; flexible grouping; research, STEAM, coding, competitions, inquiry, and design challenges; academic enrichment; and individualized instructional adaptations.

01Ask which dates the school will use for its first and second identification reviews this year.
02Obtain the child's current qualifying ELA and mathematics category from the district-approved measures actually administered.
03If the automatic two-subject route does not fit, request review through CogAT, teacher referral, classroom work, creativity, rapid-learning, or single-domain evidence.
04Explain the exact instructional mismatch—pace, depth, complexity, repetition, grouping, or advanced content—that the child experiences.
05After invitation, ask which service from the continuum will occur, with what frequency, and how progress will be reviewed.
06If access appears inconsistent with the published multiple-pathway process, seek a written response before using the Board complaint procedure.
