Huntley 158 begins universal gifted screening at the end of Grade 2 and identifies mathematics and literacy strengths through an ongoing body of evidence. Its April 2026 family presentation maps elementary clustered instruction and compacted math into multiple middle-school acceleration routes and high-school-credit coursework.

How students are considered
Published processThe district describes an ongoing multiple-criteria body of cognitive, achievement, student-growth, and development evidence. All Grade 2 students and selected Grades 3-5 students take CogAT in winter; all K-11 students take STAR Reading and Mathematics in fall, winter, and spring. Identification is subject-specific, and current programming begins in Grade 3.
What service can look like
Published modelElementary gifted ELA provides advanced vocabulary, comprehension, critical reading, extensive writing, inquiry, research, and discussion in clustered classrooms. Gifted mathematics compacts Grades 3-5 content so students can complete Grade 6 standards in Grade 5. Middle-school routes include Accelerated Math 1 or 2, Algebra I Honors, and Geometry Honors, with on- and off-ramps; high school continues into AP coursework.

01Before winter Grade 2 CogAT, ask which CogAT, STAR, classroom, growth, and development evidence will be included in the subject-specific body of evidence.
02Share concise examples that distinguish mathematics reasoning, literacy depth, creativity, rapid learning, and need for work beyond the current classroom level.
03Request the written identification and exact math-only, literacy-only, or combined classroom placement for Grade 3.
04If newly identified for compacted mathematics, use the district's summer-enrichment option to address skipped curriculum and confirm the upcoming sequence.
05For whole-grade acceleration in Grades 1-9, request the building committee and Iowa Acceleration Scale review using achievement, ability, family and teacher input, and social-emotional readiness.
