Glenview 34 universally considers all third and fifth graders for Grade 4 and Grade 6 gifted ELA placement. A two-tier matrix combines ability, achievement, family and teacher input, reading comprehension, creativity, and an abbreviated IQ assessment, followed by a published appeal calendar.

How students are considered
Published processWinter screening in Grades 3 and 5 uses CogAT, NWEA MAP, and parent and teacher input. Students reaching 7 points on the screening matrix proceed to WASI, AIMSWeb Plus Reading Comprehension, and Torrance creativity assessments; the selection matrix also requires 7-14 points. All Grade 3 and Grade 5 students are considered, and rolling admission reviews students during off-testing years.
What service can look like
Published modelGrade 3 receives gifted-teacher push-in reading and writing during unit cycles. Grades 4-5 receive a replacement reading and writing class for two hours daily. Grades 6-8 receive a daily 60-minute replacement ELA block with a certified gifted teacher, interdisciplinary units, higher-level literature and writing, research, discussion, and embedded social-emotional skills.

01During fall of Grade 3 or Grade 5, review the optional parent input form and provide concrete examples of creativity, motivation, reasoning, reading depth, and communication habits.
02Ask which two MAP administrations, CogAT results, and parent and teacher ratings will appear on the screening matrix and request the point calculation.
03If the student advances, confirm the WASI appointment and February AIMSWeb Plus and Torrance testing schedule.
04After the April decision, request the complete matrix; if eligible to appeal, prepare a parent narrative and current evidence for the May committee.
05If the student is not screened into selection, ask when rolling-admission review will occur and how the teacher will document the need for advanced ELA work.
