East Moline's TEC program screens students at every grade transition, accepts parent referral, and reviews ability, achievement, work, and teacher evidence. Grades 1-4 combine cluster classrooms with weekly pullout; Grades 5-8 use subject-specific Challenge classes.

How students are considered
Published processAll students are considered when entering Grades 1 and 5. Students not already served can be screened at other grade transitions using test scores and teacher or parent referral; Grades 5-8 also allow self-referral. A committee individually reviews profiles. Entering Grades 1-2 use ability, work, and teacher evidence; entering Grades 3-8 use recent ability and achievement tests plus teacher recommendations and ratings, with supplemental evidence when results are missing or questionable.
What service can look like
Published modelIdentified Grades 1-4 students are clustered with age peers and receive differentiated classroom work plus a weekly mathematics or language-arts pullout lasting about 90 to 150 minutes by grade. Grades 5-8 use homogeneous Challenge classrooms only in qualifying subjects: mathematics, language arts, science, or social studies. Elementary students are re-identified after Grade 4 for the middle-school model.

01Ask the teacher or TEC director to place the student in the appropriate screening pool and confirm the annual evidence and committee calendar.
02Submit a parent referral with specific examples of subject strength, complex reasoning, creative problem solving, accelerated learning, and advanced work.
03Request the profile checklist: ability scores, achievement scores where applicable, work samples, teacher recommendation and characteristics rating, plus any supplemental evidence.
04After committee review, request the written placement decision, qualifying subject areas, and watch-list or review status if the student is not selected.
05Confirm the weekly 90-to-150-minute pullout and cluster support in Grades 1-4 or the exact Challenge classes in Grades 5-8; before Grade 5, prepare for districtwide re-identification.
