Batavia begins primary high-ability identification during the winter of Grade 3. Students with consistently at-or-above 95th-percentile NWEA MAP results may enter Grade 4 reading, mathematics, or combined services, while families and teachers may request an individualized secondary review.

How students are considered
Published processAll Grade 3 students receive small-group contact with high-ability teachers, which helps surface students not captured by traditional criteria. Primary screening uses consistently at-or-above 95th-percentile NWEA MAP results. A parent or teacher may contact the school high-ability teacher for secondary review using additional achievement, ability, or aptitude evidence. Building-level decisions are final under the posted process.
What service can look like
Published modelGrades 4-5 use clustered classrooms, differentiated Jr. Great Books or Jacob's Ladder reading, and compacted mathematics that can reach Grade 6 standards by Grade 5. Grades 6-12 offer advanced, enrichment, and honors-type courses; Batavia also maintains separate early-entry, subject-acceleration, and whole-grade-acceleration routes.

02Gather MAP history, advanced work, classroom observations, and subject-specific evidence in reading or mathematics.
03If primary screening does not capture the student's needs, request the secondary process and identify the additional achievement, ability, or aptitude evidence to be reviewed.
04Ask for the written building decision and the exact Grade 4 cluster, reading enrichment, or compacted-math placement.
05Before middle or high school, review advanced and honors course selection; use the separate accelerated-placement route if single-subject, whole-grade, or early-entry acceleration is needed.
