Avoca West does not formally label gifted students. Teachers and advanced-learner coaches use classroom performance and assessment results to identify K-5 students who need more challenge, then adjust support as needs change.

How students are considered
Published processAt Avoca West, classroom teachers and math or English-language-arts coaches communicate regularly about students who are succeeding with the established curriculum and would benefit from more challenge. The program is needs-based rather than a one-time formal gifted designation. Middle-school accelerated-math placement uses multiple factors, but the public page does not state a single cutoff.
What service can look like
Published modelK-5 support starts with enriched and differentiated classroom work, can add short-term flexible math or reading groups, and may lead to an individual plan in rare cases. At Marie Murphy, the district separately documents Grade 6 regular and accelerated mathematics, with accelerated placement based on multiple weighted factors.

01Ask the classroom teacher which current performance and assessment results show that the student needs more challenge.
02Request a meeting with the math or English-language-arts advanced-learner coach and identify the subject-specific need.
03Agree on the first tier of support: enriched high-ceiling classroom tasks, differentiated work, or a short-term flexible group with a clear goal.
04If those supports remain insufficient, request an individual plan and a date for reviewing progress.
05Before Grade 6, ask Marie Murphy for the current weighted accelerated-math placement factors, evidence used, decision date, and reconsideration route.
