What the evidence confirms

Gifted & Talented Services

Orange County provides a differentiated K–12 curriculum for advanced learners identified in English and mathematics.

How services work: Performance is monitored beginning in kindergarten; identified learners receive differentiated academic services supported by school-based gifted resource teachers and the division's academic gifted model.

How students are identified: Students entering grade 3 and above may be identified in English and/or mathematics. Referrals and spring second-grade screening feed a committee review of tests, rating scales, work samples, interviews, and creativity evidence.

State context

Virginia requires each school division to identify gifted students and provide services through a locally approved comprehensive plan.

For families: The statewide requirement is consistent, but areas of identification, evidence, grade services, and delivery are local.
