What the evidence confirms
Gifted and Talented / B.E.S.T. Honors Academy
Calhoun County Public Schools supports academic and artistic gifted learners and offers the B.E.S.T. Honors Academy as an accelerated pathway into high-school and college coursework.
How services work: Gifted services are designed to nurture knowledge, creativity, confidence, and independence. Selected middle-grade B.E.S.T. students take high-school courses on the high-school campus and can progress to dual-credit courses and associate-degree study with Orangeburg-Calhoun Technical College.
How students are identified: Gifted identification follows South Carolina's statewide academic and artistic criteria. The district also publishes separate probation and removal procedures; families should contact Student Services for current referral and screening dates.

State context
South Carolina gifted and talented requirements
South Carolina requires every district to identify and serve academically and artistically gifted students, with statewide second-grade census testing and common eligibility dimensions.
For families: Academic eligibility generally requires qualifying evidence in two of three dimensions—aptitude, achievement, and performance—or the state's automatic high-composite aptitude route. Local service models and schedules vary by district.
