What the evidence confirms
Gifted and Talented Program
Berkeley County School District provides rigorous gifted classes, advanced secondary coursework, ongoing screening, and an audition-based artistic program called STEP.
How services work: Grades 3–8 use gifted classes designed for greater depth, complexity, acceleration, and enrichment; grades 9–12 continue through advanced, honors, and Advanced Placement courses. STEP adds Saturday and summer instruction in the arts for selected students.
How students are identified: All second-graders receive statewide CogAT and Iowa screening. The district also reviews i-Ready, SC READY, grades, and other data and accepts referrals in later grades; academic placement follows state dimensions, while STEP uses discipline-specific auditions.

State context
South Carolina gifted and talented requirements
South Carolina requires every district to identify and serve academically and artistically gifted students, with statewide second-grade census testing and common eligibility dimensions.
For families: Academic eligibility generally requires qualifying evidence in two of three dimensions—aptitude, achievement, and performance—or the state's automatic high-composite aptitude route. Local service models and schedules vary by district.
