What the evidence confirms

Gifted Education

Jefferson County provides gifted specialists and services beyond the regular program to meet advanced learners' distinctive academic and creative needs.

How services work: K–2 uses classroom accommodations with specialist support; grades 3–5 receive a three-hour weekly resource pull-out; grades 6–8 use advanced core or fine-arts courses; grades 9–12 use AP, IB, dual enrollment, counseling, mentorship, and independent study.

How students are identified: Anyone who knows the student may refer at any time, and every second grader participates in Child Find observation. A state matrix combines aptitude, multiple performance indicators, and a teacher-completed gifted-behavior scale.

For families: Families may initiate a referral through their local school system. Eligibility and services follow the Alabama framework, while grade configuration, setting, and instructional schedule are determined locally.
