State research baseline

South Carolina gifted and talented requirements

South Carolina requires every district to identify and serve academically and artistically gifted students, with statewide second-grade census testing and common eligibility dimensions.

What this means for families: Academic eligibility generally requires qualifying evidence in two of three dimensions—aptitude, achievement, and performance—or the state's automatic high-composite aptitude route. Local service models and schedules vary by district.

Gifted and Talented Programs

The School District of Pickens County provides accelerated and enriched gifted instruction through pull-out and special-class models matched to identified learners' needs.

How services work: A weekly pull-out model provides differentiated instruction and may use multi-grade grouping; special classes organize accelerated curriculum around one or more academic disciplines. Both models extend complexity, research, communication, problem solving, and independent learning beyond grade-level standards.

How students are identified: All second-graders receive aptitude and achievement testing in fall. Families, educators, and administrators may refer at any time, and placement teams apply South Carolina's aptitude, achievement, and performance criteria, including performance tasks or qualifying GPA when applicable.
