Academically or Intellectually Gifted (AIG)
Yancey County combines weekly elementary specialist access, universal screening, talent search, and grade-banded services for advanced learners.
How services work: Grades 4–5 receive small-group pull-outs in identified subjects; grades 6–12 use honors classes and targeted weekly support, complemented by compacting, independent study, differentiated enrichment, clustering, and subject or grade acceleration.
How students are identified: All second-graders receive the full CogAT each spring. K–12 screening also uses state and local tests, grades, observations, gifted-trait evidence, and referrals from families or educators, including early K–2 review when exceptional need is demonstrated.
