Academically and Intellectually Gifted (AIG)

Orange County identifies and serves advanced academic and intellectual needs through a K–12 continuum governed by its current local plan.

How services work: School-based AIG staff coordinate differentiated curriculum, flexible grouping, enrichment, acceleration, advanced coursework, and annual plans that reflect students' areas of identification and demonstrated need.

How students are identified: The district uses an ongoing three-step screening, referral, and results process. District, state, and local data identify candidates, while each school's Needs Determination Team reviews referrals and makes identification decisions.

Gifted Education

Chapel Hill-Carrboro integrates talent development, talent detection, and advanced learning into the district's broader instructional program.

How services work: The classroom teacher provides primary differentiation in reading and mathematics with support from gifted education specialists; the LEAP pathway offers extreme differentiation for highly gifted upper-elementary and middle-school learners.

How students are identified: All third-graders receive universal screening unless families opt out. Grade 5 and other eligible students may be referred, and school teams consider aptitude, achievement, gifted characteristics, portfolios, interviews, and other qualitative evidence under published pathways.
