Gifted Services / GATE
Tuscaloosa County provides a continuous K–12 gifted pathway using classroom differentiation, resource instruction, a creative-thinking course, Academic Scholars, and self-selected advanced high-school opportunities.
How services work: K–2 uses teacher consultation; grades 3–5 receive at least three weekly pull-out hours; grade 6 uses Creative Expressions 6-GATE; grades 7–8 use Academic Scholars with consultation; high school offers honors, AP, dual enrollment, early college, independent study, and cooperative placements.
How students are identified: School staff, families, or students may refer, and all second graders are observed. A state matrix weighs aptitude, gifted characteristics, and at least three performance indicators to determine eligibility.
