Twain Harte universally offers Grade 3 testing unless a family opts out and accepts referrals for Grades 4-8 from parents, educators, counselors, and administrators. Identification uses several kinds of evidence rather than one score alone.

How students are considered
Published processAnnual screening and identification cover Grades 3-8. All Grade 3 students may test unless a parent opts out; Grades 4-8 students may be referred. With parent consent, the district reviews OLSAT8 results, achievement records, up to five work samples, teacher recommendations, and other licensed assessments. A student may be reconsidered once during Grades 3-5 and once during Grades 6-8.
What service can look like
Published modelThe district may use part-time groups and seminars, cluster grouping, independent study, acceleration, supplemental activities, field trips, and social-emotional support. Families should ask the school which options and frequency apply to the student's current grade.

01For Grade 3, watch for the annual testing notice and return any required consent or opt-out response.
02For Grades 4-8, send a written parent referral and request the current consent and evidence packet.
03Collect achievement records and up to five representative work samples that show advanced reasoning or performance.
04Ask when the committee will review OLSAT8, recommendations, work, and other assessment evidence.
05After identification, request the grade-specific service type, schedule, differentiation plan, and social-emotional support options.
