How students are considered
Published processSanta Cruz Elementary uses CogAT across verbal, quantitative, and nonverbal reasoning and tests all students. A score at or above the 97th percentile in any one area establishes gifted identification; the district also serves students scoring at or above the 92nd percentile as talented. Parents and staff may recommend assessment, new students are tested, three windows occur at the beginning of school, fall, and winter, and a student may test only once per year.
What service can look like
Published modelStudents receive at least two hours of weekly pullout with a certified gifted teacher. Lessons emphasize creative and critical thinking, problem-solving, verbal, spatial, and mathematical reasoning through tools such as logic puzzles, Hands-On Equations, Socratic seminars, and science or social-studies units. The district distinguishes Arizona-identified gifted students from locally identified talented students while serving both.

01Ask Little Red School whether the student is already included in districtwide CogAT testing or whether a written parent recommendation is needed.
02Confirm the beginning-of-school, fall, or winter test date and make sure the student has not already tested during the same school year.
03Request all three CogAT battery percentiles and determine whether the child meets the 97th-percentile gifted rule or the district's 92nd-percentile talented threshold.
04After identification, confirm the weekly pullout schedule includes at least two hours with the certified gifted teacher.
05Review whether activities address the child's identified verbal, quantitative, or nonverbal strength and ask how progress will be communicated.
