Charleston publishes a clear K-12 service continuum and two recurring referral cutoffs. Families pick up a referral at any school office and return it by the end of September for fall testing or the end of February for spring testing.

How students are considered
Published processFormal pullout identification begins in Grade 3. A family starts by obtaining the referral form from the elementary, middle, or high school office and returning it for the fall or spring testing cycle. The current public page does not publish a single numeric cutoff, so parents should request the complete assessment and placement rubric from the coordinator.
What service can look like
Published modelK-2 students receive enrichment beyond the basic curriculum. Identified Grades 3-4 students receive a scheduled 150-minute weekly pullout. Grades 5-8 receive enrichment from trained teachers, while Grades 9-12 can use Pre-AP, AP, concurrent college courses, and other higher-level work. Students in Grades 5-12 also meet monthly around goals and community activities.

01Pick up the GT referral form from the student's school office and select the fall or spring testing cycle.
02Return it before the end-of-September or end-of-February cutoff and confirm the exact date in writing.
03Ask the coordinator which ability, achievement, creativity, motivation, and observation evidence will reach the placement committee.
04Request the written results and verify the actual grade-level service, especially the 150 weekly minutes in Grades 3-4.
05Before secondary registration, map enrichment, monthly GT meetings, Pre-AP, AP, and concurrent-credit choices.
